The locking tailgate has built-in louvers that reduce drag, and it mounts securely with rotary latches and coated cables.This tailgate is the ultimate "plug and play" item. In total it took me less than 30 minutes to open the box and install it. It was so quick and easy I triple checked it fearing I messed up. Light weight yet sturdy.
This tailgate looks great and works great. The instructions are easy to follow for the installation.
It took me about 20 minutes to complete the installation process.
I recommend the Carlson Stromberg 4000 series tailgate.

Well, the tailgate itself, has been a Godsend for towing our 5th wheel camper. However, the spring loaded latching mechanism (or lack thereof) caused me a bit of a problem early, last spring. We were on our way back fro FL and stopped in Washington, DC to see my Granddaughter at College. As we were leaving the KOA, I had to lower the tailgate to hook up the the rig due to a steep grade. When I slammed the tailgate, I forgot to manually twist the knob, counterclockwise, back to it's latched position, because it doesn't spring back by itself! As we drove off, I heard a slight thump, which is normal for an F450/5th wheel rig these days, so I continued on. When we got out to the main road, we had a sharp right turn onto said road. As I drove off, I heard an "excruciating, tearing" sound that turned out to be the top point of the right side of the tailgate "Ripping" a 3 foot slice into my front cargo door of our 2021 5th wheel. My fault, obviously, but still would be nice to have a spring loaded latch on there!!!
Received the units on scheduled delivery date. The directions were fair, little confusing on some parts. But the videos helped. Purchased the fifth wheel gate and the insert. Was surprised the insert was metal.
This gate looks good on the vehicle. It took approximately 40 minutes to do the complete install. I purchased this gate because it will be easier to hookup to my fifth wheel trailer.
I believe this gate was sold at a fair price and appears to be a quality product.

This product is working out good.
Purchased for my Ford F350 Super Duty pickup. Fair price, easy to install, great fit. Makes it so much easier to hook and un-hook my 5th wheel trailer. Really great product, would buy again.
Nice tailgate had to fabricate hinge points a little. If picture is showing put camera just below lock that plugs into ford wiring
This is great easy to install and fits perfect and looks good.
Not many options for Ford 2018 F-350 Super Duty 5th wheel tailgates. This one fits and looks good on my truck. It is plastic but for me that's ok. Worst instructions I've ever tried to read and the illustrations were useless. End covers were aggravating to put on having to take the tailgate on and off several times to adjust each side. All in all it serves its purpose and price was decent.
The tailgate is beautiful and very easy to install. It is very sturdy. I like the lower cut for the 5th wheel than other have. It makes back access so easy and great clearance when loading the trailer.
I have bought many items from "etrailer" and will continue to support this company. The are fast, efficient and have great prices.

The tailgate installed fairly easily. The photos (figures) could have been larger to assist with details. Instructions were clearly written so the install went along without too much “head scratching.”
Delivery of product was done by UPS and delivered on the date I paid for.
I also purchased the accessory which fills in the V and it install easily too.

Installed on the truck quickly. I have a little damage to truck when my 5th wheel hit the original tailgate. But the Carlson tailgate still worked. Should work better when I get the damage fixed. Didn't give it 5 star's because they didn't make any provisions for adding a camera.

I bought the tailgate and the plate and mounted them on my F150 XLT. The instructions to install them was very simple to follow. But, screwing the plate to the tailgate made very little sense. I use a tonneau cover to cover the truck bed when not hooked up to the trailer. So screwing the in and out every time I stop at a camp ground would destroy the threads in the plastic real fast. With the tonneau cover on the louvers on the tailgate drawl water and dust into the truck bed. So, here is my solution to the problems. I installed the tailgate as instructed. Then added two metal bars with spacers to capture the when I put it in place look closely at the picture Ive sent. The plastic part of the tailgate and the set lower than the top of the tailgate ends. I add a 1 inch square hard wood filler to the top of the and latched the assemble to the plastic part of the tailgate. I then added 18 plywood to the inside of the tailgate to block the water and dust. As long as I was improving the tailgate to meet my needs I added a 3D printed handle to pull it open and a rear view camera that is wired to match up with the truck harness I also printed a cover for the camera.
We received the tailgate, and our crew got it installed on their truck and are very happy with how everything turned out

This is the second Stromberg Carlson 5th wheel tailgate I have owned. It requires very little assembly and installs easily. Both seemed to be well built and complimented the appearance of my F150s. But I do have two complaints. First, for a few pennies more, SC could provide stainless steel hardware. The 4 screws and 2 bolts as well as the screws holding on the removeable plate allowing access to the lock mechanism all rusted badly on the first one. I replaced them with stainless steel. So I discarded the hardware that came with this one and used stainless hardware from the start. Second, SC does not currently manufacture a camera relocation kit. I have become rather fond of the visibility provided by back-up cameras. I ended up naking my own mounting kit and it functions OK and looks faily professional, but I believe that if SC made a camera relocation kit, it would be more attractive than mine.

It is fine.
The tailgate was easy to install and instructions were clear. After a year of use it still performs well. The latch mechanism is a bit stiff and does not consistently latch the tailgate in a closed position. The one improvement I’d recommend is for etrailer to offer an aftermarket backup camera that would plug into my existing Ford F-250 wiring harness. Currently, after removing the stock tailgate, I lose the benefit of a backup camera.

My initial review remains accurate. I ended up purchasing an aftermarket back-up camera that works but requires a separate monitor. Also the tailgate latch remains stiff and does not latch easily. Overall I’d still purchase the tailgate again.
Received the new tailgate in three days. I installed it today. It fit my 2017 Ford F350 Super Duty perfect right out of the box. Didn't even have to make an adjustment on the latches. It took about thirty minutes total to remove my factory tailgate and install this one. Took more time to fit the side trim pieces than anything else. I had been waiting six months for manufactures to start making a gate for the 2017 Ford. Only identified one mfg making a metal gate and they wanted almost twice the cost of the Stromberg Carlson. I had reservations about getting a composite gate after having three metal ones but now since ordering it I am perfectly happy with the decision. Looks super nice at a very affordable price. etrailer can't be beat for product knowledge and customer service.

I have now had this tailgate over one year. It is doing a good job and looks nice. I was concerned about buying a composite tailgate but for the price it is a good deal. Just have to be a little more careful as to where you step and dont overload it. Very satisfied.
The tailgate is great for RVing. I have a large Lance pickup slide in camper that requires me to remove the tailgate each time. This tailgate is light, but sturdy and can be removed and installed in seconds. Only minor complaint is the latch system has a poor spring so when you close to it you must turn the lock manually to keep the gate from falling.

You mentioned that the dress-up side do not fit and I wanted to see if you could send a picture? I also have a video install that we have on a 2018 Ford 250 that is similar to the Ford 350 to reference.

This tailgate looks good and functions great. I’m happy with the tailgate even though it’s plastic and my last one was metal. It’s a lot lighter to swap with my regular tailgate. The only real issue with this tailgate is that the design doesn’t allow for a backup camera. If there was a camera built into the tailgate I would not have to swap out the tailgate.

Still using the tailgate when ever we go out with the trailer. Still loving it.
The parts arrived quickly and fit great. And I appreciated the great communication. Now I just need to learn how to incorporate the trucks back up camera.
Purchased Stromberg Carlson Tail gate for 2017 Super Duty F350. Have not yet installed, However after watching the videos on installation, I see no problem. Do wish it had more than a 100 lb. rating, however no one else has one available. Shipping was super fast and no damage.

Its been a year and this thing is still going strong! When I lubricate my 5th wheel hitch with spray white lithium grease, I usually give a tiny squirt to the latches and hinge pins of the tailgate on my way out of the truck. I also shoot a squirt of WD40 in the lock key lot once in a while to keep that functioning properly... all in all, I am psyched with the way this tailgate has performed! other than the latch issue, described in my original review
